I wish for a cremation
It is permissible to store ashes at home, carry out scattering of ashes.
Cremation is of free choice
To keep the ashes at home, it is sufficient for the next of kin, to request for themselves, or consent that the ashes of their relative be delivered to thecaregiver who agrees to their preservation at their residence. For example, the spouse authorizing one of the children.
For dispersal, it is sufficient for the next of kin to declare the will of the deceased, or for it to result from the will or simple holographic statement.
The City of Milan has only one facility, located in Lambrate Cemetery, where cremations of residents or those whose death occurred in the municipal area are authorized;
For cremations of nonresidents or bone remains, it is not always possible to perform the cremation in the Lambrate Crematorium: therefore, it will be necessary to have a funeral transport with destination to one of several private crematoriums in the area.
Cremation procedure
The Cremation Procedure consists of several steps, relating to Consent for Cre mation,Cremation Authorization,Execution, and Removal of Ashes.
01. Consent
Consent must be expressed by signing the appropriate form by the next of kin. In case of infirmity of the next of kin, i.e., inability to travel to the municipal offices, an appointee will pay a visit to the home, upon presentation of appropriate medical certification attesting to the inability to move.
The next of kin is, in no changeable order:
The living Spouse;
The parent(s), if living and in the absence of the spouse;
The children, or the majority in case of greater number than two;
The brothers and sisters (collaterals) of the deceased, provided there are no ascending or descendant relatives;
The grandchildren, or children of the children, if they were no longer living relatives mentioned above, the majority in case of odd number.
Grandchildren, provided that they are children of brothers or sisters of the deceased, or a majority of them if more than two in number
Relatives who are above the second degree in descent or collateral beyond the fourth degreeare not considered next of kin.
02. Authorization
Cremation Authorization is always issued by the municipality where the death occurred, regardless of the cause, and whether the body was later transported to a funeral home.
In some cases, in order to obtain authorization, it is necessary to wait for suspicion of foul play to be ruled out, among the causes of death are those cases in which death occurs due to accidental causes.

03. Execution
The cremation procedure is now performed in the absence of relatives, whose farewell ends at the end of the funeral.
In some Cremation facilities, it is possible to accompany the body of your loved one until the procedure begins.
04. Withdrawal of ashes
Collection of ashes can normally take place a few hours after the Cremation, in Milan from the next day. However, it is not uncommon for ashes to be picked up on the day of burial, or on the day the ashes are transported to a remote destination and subsequent burial.
The transport of ashes does not require the use of a funeral vehicle, but a transport permit, always issued by the municipality that authorized the cremation, is essential.
